Clinics and Services Available at the Practice

The doctors all provide general medical services including the following:

• Maternity medical services
• Contraceptive services
• Child health surveillance services
• Minor surgery services

Antenatal Clinic

The practice team provides care for patients who are pregnant. The midwife mainly undertakes antenatal care, the doctors will see patients when the pregnancy is confirmed and again at 24 weeks (if it is more convenient for the patient the midwife is happy to undertake the 24 week check). The midwife arranges an initial appointment to see patients in her clinic and then books all necessary follow-up appointments. Once a pregnancy is confirmed the patient needs to book into a routine double appointment with the doctor, the doctor will make the appropriate referral for obstetric care.

Asthma

As part of their long-term management all patients are encouraged to attend the asthma clinic for an annual check, this ensures that you are taking the most appropriate medication and that your asthma is controlled. A reminder will be sent to patients when their clinic visit is due. Support and advice is also offered for smoking cessation. This clinic is only intended for long-term asthma management. For urgent asthma care, please make an appointment with any doctor in the usual way.

Baby Clinic

Immunisation clinics are held on Wednesday between 10am and 11.30am.

Cardiovascular Risk Assessment

The practice nurses carry out cardiovascular risk assessments (referral is from a doctor so please speak to a doctor if you believe there are indications that you need an assessment). We can offer advice on the main causes of heart disease: smoking, high blood pressure, a family history of heart attacks or stroke, high cholesterol and obesity.

Cervical Smears

Our practice nurses do routine smears; they are carried out in accordance with guidance from the NHS Cervical Screening Programme.

Contraception

We are able to provide a wide range of contraception within the surgery. Our nurses and all the doctors can advise you during routine appointments on all aspects of contraception, pills (including emergency contraception), diaphragms, IUDs, coils and sterilisation. Dr Boden holds specialist qualifications in family planning that enables her to fit intrauterine devices (coils) and diaphragms. This confidential service is available to patients of any age who require advice.

Diabetes

All diabetic patients have a comprehensive annual check-up, which includes testing blood, urine, and also a physical examination. Screening for possible eye problems linked with diabetes, is undertaken, and all our diabetic patients are also referred for retinal photography and dietary advice; Dr Cheetham, Dr Hussain and Sister Garner run this clinic during normal surgery hours. Emergency Contraception

Any patient contacting the practice for advice will be offered an individual, confidential appointment with a doctor or nurse on the same day. All patients must be seen at the surgery. No telephone consultations can be offered unless the patient only requires advice and no treatment is needed.  A reliable hormonal method is available for emergency contraception. It is effective if it is taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. It is important to remember that the earlier it is taken the less chance there is of pregnancy (if possible in first 24 hours after sex). An alternative method is a copper IUD or coil. This can be fitted up to five days after unprotected sex. Advice or prescriptions for emergency contraception is available during surgery hours. You do not have to be registered with the practice to receive this. Confidentiality is assured at all times. Follow-up is also advised to discuss further contraception.

Joint Injections

Some arthritic joint conditions, as well as many chronic inflammatory conditions such as 'tennis elbow, may benefit from a steroid injection. Please see the doctors for further advice.

Minor Surgery

During minor surgery appointments, the doctors can remove warts, some moles, and skin tags using simple surgical techniques. The Doctors are approved for minor surgery. These appointments should be booked after discussion with the doctors.

Other Clinics

The practice nurses may also give you advice on the following:

• Stop smoking
• Weight management
• Healthy eating
• Influenza vaccination, during October and November each year

Post Natal Clinic

Post-natal appointments are booked at 9am and 9.20am on Wednesday morning. Post-natal checks take place 8 weeks after delivery. Patients are sent an appointment by the practice. Baby immunisations are usually arranged for the same time as the post-natal appointment.

Stroke Monitoring

If you have experienced a stroke in the past you will be invited to attend a stroke monitoring clinic appointment annually. The clinic is run by the practice nurse and includes a variety of health checks and advice.

Teenage Advice

Confidential advice is available to all teenagers, on any matter including general health, eating disorders, spots and acne, emotional problems, sexual health and contraception. Please speak to a nurse or doctor.

Temporary Residents

The doctors are prepared to see any of your family and friends who need a doctor when they are staying with you. Similarly, when you are away from home in the UK you can visit any local doctor as a temporary resident, without having to register as a permanent patient at the surgery.

Travel Vaccinations

Please see the separate page oposite for information about our travel clinic.  Please note we are a registered Yellow Fever Centre and can provide Yellow Fever vaccination for people who are not registered as patients at the surgery.

Well Person Check

A well person check is carried out by the practice nurse and involves routine health checks and advice – if you are not under regular review by the doctor or nurse you may wish to book an appointment for a well person check.

Test Results

Please note that if the test result is for an adult we will only give the result to the person to which the test relates - staff are not being obstructive, they are following the doctors instructions relating to patient confidentiality.

The phlebotomist carries out blood tests that are recommended by the doctors. She holds a clinic on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Our practice nurses will take blood samples if the doctor states that they required urgently, but it is important that we do not use up nurse appointments for routine blood tests.

Please Note:

• For cholesterol, lipid and blood glucose tests you need to fast from midnight, and have nothing to eat or drink except water until you have your blood test (please ask for an early morning appointment).
• For children under 10 years who need blood tests, an anaesthetic cream is available to reduce the pain (ask a doctor or nurse). Blood tests in the under 5's should be discussed with a doctor as these are usually carried out at hospital and the doctor will arrange this. For children aged 5-10 years, a practice nurse can take the sample.

X-Rays

If the doctor asks you to attend hospital for an x-ray you will be given a form to take to the hospital. The doctor will tell you which hospital to attend. Please check department opening times with the relevant hospital, especially over holiday periods.

X-ray results take at least 5 working days to reach the Practice.

ECGs

ECG (Alexandra Hospital) – the doctor will give you an ECG request form, with telephone details attached, to enable you to make an appointment.

Other Tests

Any samples need to be sent to the hospital by early afternoon, so please bring samples to reception by 12 noon, in the plastic bag provided by the doctor. Evening appointments are generally unsuitable for blood tests, swabs and urine samples.

Please ensure that all urine and faeces samples are placed in an appropriate container, which can be obtained from reception.

Private Services

Some services fall outside the NHS and for these a charge will be made. These include BUPA / PPP forms, private certificates, and various special examinations for employment, elderly drivers’ insurance, sports and schools tests. A full list of these services, including charges, is available at reception.

Medical examinations, if required (e.g. by an insurance company) are charged at standard BMA rates. If you need a special examination please arrange this with the receptionist, as they cannot be done within NHS time.

Please take note that a longer appointment will be required. Failure to attend an appointment will incur a fee.

Occupational Health Vaccinations

Occupational health vaccinations, i.e. Hepatitis B vaccinations, fall outside the NHS and are the responsibility of your employer. We do not offer these vaccinations to our patients.

Carer Support Services available at New Road Surgery - ARE YOU A HIDDEN CARER?

New Road Surgery with the support of Redditch and Bromsgrove Clinical Commissioning Group have commissioned this new service.  New Road Surgery & Worcestershire Association of Carers are leading the way by introducing this service dedicated to the support of carers. Carers can make an appointment with Pam Clark, the GP Carer Support Adviser, who will be giving 1 to 1 support to carers, within our practice and also making home visits for those who are currently unable to leave the person they ca re for on their own. The support service is designed to reach out to carers, telling them about the support available to them and looking at numerous issues including social isolation, accessing correct benefits, respite care etc.

Would you be surprised to know that throughout the UK approximately six thousand new people per day are identified as carers? These are unpaid people who support a relative, friend or neighbour who, through ill health, frailty or disability, mental health or addiction are no longer able to care for themselves. Often called 'hidden carers', research shows that approximately 65% of people with a caring responsibility did not see themselves as a carer in the first year of caring and for a third of them it took over five years before they recognised they were a carer. Twice as likely to suffer ill health as those who do not have caring responsibilities, people who provide high levels of care can ultimately find their own needs are neglected with the demands often affecting their career, finances and relationships, thus having a detrimental effect on both their physical and emotional wellbeing.
